End of a Decade
As the year draws to a close and a new decade begins, I am mindful of how far we’ve come over the past 10 years. It’s easy to get wrapped up into looking forward, setting new resolutions or pondering what hasn’t been accomplished feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. Those are natural things to do but occasionally it’s nice to look back and acknowledge all the progress that has been made. It helps us gain perspective and gives us the raw material for feeling empowered to accomplish new goals and move forward.
Can you believe the first iPad came out in April of 2010? It seems like it has been part of our lives forever. Emojis weren’t released until 2015. We have also experienced one of the longest bull markets in stock market history. We are ten years off the financial crisis bottom and things are still fundamentally strong. Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Just a year ago the stock market suffered its worst December since the Great Depression. My youngest child turned 10 this year and I have 14 employees in my business, a decade ago I had one. Looking at things over the long run brings a completely different and helpful perspective.
When clients come in for periodic reviews, we look back over the past year and often longer to measure their financial success and results. This is easy to do when it comes to facts and figures; it’s more challenging when it comes to measuring other aspects of our lives. I want to challenge us to measure our success by looking backwards, instead of looking forward into the future and seeing what we don’t have, what hasn’t happened yet or comparing and measuring ourselves to others. Abundance starts with seeing how far you’ve come and feeling gratitude in the moment.
